stephanie and i are awaiting the arrival of this tiny stranger who we will instantly + unconditionally love from the very moment we set eyes on her. there was a time before i met and fell in love with stephanie that i didn’t know her; i didn’t know who she was. there was even a more recent time when we did meet, but weren’t in love and only knew each other from passing by. eventually (although we are talking a very short “eventually”) we grew to love each other and fell in love. it was something of a build up with subtle, deepening exchanges, that led us to where we are. but isla is going to be the big bang. from the nothingness of an empty baby björn to a previously unimaginable explosion of love.

it is truly mind-bending.

stephanie’s body is getting ready to release isla into the world, and satch + punks are certainly aware of the impending change. punks is always now on stephanie’s belly, and satch is noticably gentler to and concerned with her.

we’ve had our baby showers and the bedding + clothes are washed and put away. we are just waiting now.

we lived in some suburban condo complex, but the neighbors were the same and had rented their place. i looked out the front window and saw our macho neighbor standing there, dutifully collecting things to carry down to his car. no big deal.

except that he had on copious amounts of rouge, a curly blonde wig, heels and a polka dot dress.

we had strained conversation and then i ran back to stephanie, who was in the shower, to tell her all about his crossdressing nonchalance.

the other dream was that stephanie, satch and i were standing on michigan ave, but it wasn’t quite michigan avenue.

there was also another couple with a dog.

suddenly we realized that we were standing in front of a post office.

a postal worker came out and told us that if we were going to have our dogs out front of the post office, federal law required that they be lying down.

so i made satch lie down and no sooner did he roll onto his side when a brown wild rabbit ran out of the field, came right up to his nose and nuzzled it.

then i saw that the rabbit actually had a bone with some meat on it. they shared.

tuesday morning at 8:00, we have the 20-week ultrasound. stephanie will make sure she’s properly hydrated and we’ll find out all about gus’ health, size & weight. most exciting of all is finding out what gus is. no more “it”s; we’re moving on to “he”s or “she”s. we’ve already picked out two sets of bedding and two paint colors. stephanie’s finger is already on the pottery barn kids checkout button.

gus’ growth has been amazing. for 17 weeks, the little thing grew and grew, but was so small that stephanie didn’t really change. suddenly, two weeks ago, this tiny little belly started appearing and, inside of it, a little kicking monster. we now spend large chunks of time just staring at her belly, waiting for gus to kick or punch again. she’s my beautiful little pregnant wife.

we rented a belly beats fetal doppler monitor for the month. it’s amazing to hear that tiny little thing beating away 155 times per minute. it’s such a strange thing to imagine this little bugger inside of stephanie. obviously it’s still dependent on her for food & shelter, but it has its own heartbeat; its own little brain. it’s completely baffling; so i did what any good dad-to-be would do: i made an iphone ringtone.
